I was out with my Brother-in-law who had to take two of his lads to their football match. I already had a camera with me and asked if I could go along and take some pictures.
You may not be overly surprised by this but it's actually something I hadn't done with the camera before.
Although I shoot planes and motorcycles they're movement tends to be linear and predictable. School kids playing football is a completely different kettle of fish. They run in all directions, swapping and changing constantly.
Add to that the ball being passed to and fro and you have yourself a challenge.
Now I constantly hear other photographers complaining that Pentax are no good for Sports. Well I'll say now that I could not have expected anything better from any camera.
There's a deal of difference in lenses and their abilities but my K-5II camera was spot on throughout the match and I was very happy with the results I got.
I used the relatively inexpensive DA55-300 WR lens and from the touchline I could get a decent picture from most of the pitch. Autofocus was snappy and accurate and it was a pleasure getting this discipline sorted.
There's a great deal of anticipation and/or luck involved but the equipment served me well and I'm very pleased to dispel the rumours about Pentax and sports.
If you have any specific questions about getting good results from your Pentax DSLR at sports events then feel free to ask in the comments.
As always, if you need a photographer for your celebration or event please just email me.
